Many a companion sits beside me, on the

earth, yet seems to be atop my head.

He shows me affection, yet my heart rejects him,

Unlike those I choose among my companions—

From Thabīr, from ʿAsīb, and Raḍwā,

And Lukām, and the great mountain of Bayyās.

And a bore’s talk brings on a fever

Of the soul—a wasting fever—and constricted breathing.
