To God I complain of the heat of a fire that has flared up,

increasing passion between the breastbones and the heart.

And indeed, with the one I love, of no avail to me

is my submission before him in letters and [books?].

Nor is he one whose heart poetry softens

when I praise him in sweet words.

And I have seen no subtler stratagem for winning the beloved,

or one more heart-softening than white, [round?], minted coins.

Through them, a slain man's mother found solace after his killing,

and for love of them the [coward?] crawls to war.
