أحقّ الناس بالذل الفقير

أحقّ الناس بالذل الفقير

وأقربهم من الضرّ الضرير

وأقربهم من الضرّ الضرير

The one most deserving of blame is the poor man;

Of all people, the poor man is most deserving of humiliation.

and nearest of all to harm is the blind man.

And the blind man is closest among them to suffering.

وأبعدهم من النسوان حظّا

وأبعدهم من النسوان حظّا

إذا ما بيّض الشيخ الكبير

إذا ما بيّض الشيخ الكبير

And the one with the least fortune among women—

And the least fortunate among them with women

once he has gone white—is the aged sheikh.

is the aged man, once his hair turns white.

ويأتي ما يغطي كل هذا

ويأتي ما يغطي كل هذا

أمور في عواقبها أمور

أمور في عواقبها أمور

Then comes something that overshadows all of this:

affairs with yet more affairs in their wake.
