من زلال البارد العذب الخصر
And when the thirsty man finds no relief from thirst
When the thirsty cannot find fresh
In clear, cool, sweet, cold water,
Cool water from a slender stream

رشفَ الحمأة والماء الكدر
And sees death before his eyes in his thirst,
And sees death clearly in the blur
He sips black mud and murky water.
He sips hot urine and muddy drink
ليسis not للمرءfor a man الذيthat which يختارهhe chooses it
ليس للمرء الذي يختاره
ولهand he has منof أمرهhis affairs ماwhat قدalready قدرwas decreed
وله من أمره ما قد قدر
A man does not have what he chooses;
What one is destined cannot change
And in his affairs he has only what has been decreed.
Fate and decree cannot rearrange
