And when careful reflection made it clear to me,
When my mind was cleared to examine thought,
along with knowledge and the evidence of direct observation,
And knowledge and proof became evident,
بأنthat الناسpeople أكثرهمmost of them خلافيunlike me
بأن الناس أكثرهم خلافي
علىin regard to خلقيmy nature وأوصافيand my qualities وشانيand my condition
على خلقي وأوصافي وشاني
that most people are unlike me
I found most people opposed
in my nature, my qualities, and my condition,
My nature, qualities and status.

لأنbecause الضدthe opposite مملولwearisome المكانthe place
لأن الضد مملول المكان
I rejoiced in letting their ignorant one turn away,
I was glad to leave the ignorant ones go astray,
for an opposite's presence is wearisome.
For opposites quickly part ways.

أديب فاضل حسن البيان
For none loves me except one of my own kind:
None wished me well but one of my own kind,
a man of letters, virtuous and eloquent.
A refined, eloquent man of wisdom.

And when the proud-spirited among them loved me,
When the virtuous ones wished me well,
and people of merit, from far and near,
Poets and scholars from near and far,

I rejoiced in the love of those of merit among them,
I was gladdened by the affection of these nobles,
and I took no fright at the oxen of the plough.
And paid no heed to the common throng.
