وقالواand they said ابنةdaughter الحصريّal-Ḥuṣrī مالتinclined بودّهاwith her affection
وقالوا ابنة الحصريّ مالت بودّها
إلىtoward قلبheart عبدa slave وهوand he فيin الودlove أميلmore inclined
إلى قلب عبد وهو في الود أميل
And they said: Al-Ḥuṣrī’s daughter inclined her affection
They said the daughter of Al-Hosri inclined with her love
toward a slave’s heart, and he was more inclined to love.
Towards the heart of a slave while he was inclined to love
دجاgrew dark بكover you فيin بحرsea الخطوبtroubles ملالةweariness
دجا بك في بحر الخطوب ملالة
وصارand he became لهاhers عبداa slave يقولhe speaks ويفعلand he acts
وصار لها عبدا يقول ويفعل
Weariness cast its gloom over you in the sea of troubles,
She rolled with you in a sea of courtship out of boredom
and he became her slave, speaking and acting.
And he became for her a slave who says and does
فقلتso I said ولمand did not آسفgrieve عليهاfor her بمثلهwith one like him
فقلت ولم آسف عليها بمثله
هنيئاmay it be pleasant لهاfor her ماءwater البشامthe balsam tree وحنظلand colocynth
هنيئا لها ماء البشام وحنظل
