ويفرحand rejoices يومon the day of العيدthe feast منwhoever فيهin him متعةenjoyment
ويفرح يوم العيد من فيه متعة
ومستمتعand one enjoying فيin ملكهhis possession المالwealth والوفرand abundance
ومستمتع في ملكه المال والوفر
And on the feast day, he who has something to enjoy rejoices,
Joyous on feast days are those who find pleasure,
And one who enjoys the wealth and abundance he possesses—
And he who revels in his wealth and abundance.

إليه وأعداه على عسره الدهر
A young man whose days and time have smiled
A youth whose days laughed and whose times
Upon him, and whom time has helped overcome his hardship.
Brought him ease and lifted him from the hardship of fate.

So do not ask me how my feast day is, for I
Ask me not how my feast day is, for I
Have seen that one of slender means has no standing.
Saw the frail state that has no worth.

لسان الفتى بالعسر أسكته الفقر
Ask my condition about my feast day, and you will not forget it.
Ask the state about my feast day, and ask it not,
Poverty has silenced the young man's tongue through hardship.
For the tongue of the youth in hardship is silenced by poverty.

A stranger, alone—Ahnaf, whose head has turned gray;
A lonesome, lonely, poor young man, his head bowed,
And poverty has kept him company, so prosperity has severed ties with him.
And his companion poverty, so fortune has hardened against him.
