The consolation of my neighbor and plotting
ويمنعنيand restrains me أنthat يسطunclear as written الجارthe neighbor عادةhabitually
ويمنعني أن يسط الجار عادة
وليسand there is no لمعروفfor the kindness of المقلthe person of little means مزيدfurther increase
وليس لمعروف المقل مزيد
And what holds me back is the neighbor's habitual [action unclear in the text].
And prevents me when the neighbor spreads habit
And a poor man's kindness can go no further.
And the few kind acts have no increase
ويقبضنيand holds me back عنfrom عادةthe habit of الخيرdoing good غيرهits vicissitudes
ويقبضني عن عادة الخير غيره
كماas قالsaid غيريsomeone other than me وافطامand weaning جهيدarduous
كما قال غيري وافطام جهيد
And its vicissitudes hold me back from the habit of doing good,
And he holds me back from the habit of kindness from others
as another has said: 'And weaning is arduous.'
As others have said, and weaning of effort
وإنand indeed زماناan age يمنعprevents الحرthe noble man خيرهhis kindness
وإن زمانا يمنع الحر خيره
عنfrom الناسpeople منout of خوفfear of الأذىharm لشديدis indeed harsh
عن الناس من خوف الأذى لشديد
Indeed, an age that keeps a noble man from extending his kindness
And if an era prevents the free man his good
to people for fear of harm is harsh indeed.
