وأخذت من دبس العراق ومثله

And I took some molasses from Iraq, and an equal measure

I took honey from Iraq and the like

of water from clouds, shaded by clouds.

وضربته عشرا وكنت أدوم

And I poured the grain into it, then mashed it,

And poured love into it then left it to settle

and beat it ten times, and kept at it.

And flogged it ten times, persisting

والشمس في الأسد المنير وللهوا

حرّ الهجير توقّد وسموم

حرّ الهجير توقّد وسموم

And the sun was in radiant Leo, and the air held

With the sun in the shining Lion, and for distraction

blazing noonday heat and scorching winds.

The hot wind kindled poison and venom

وأجدت عمّته بطين لازب

وأجدت عمّته بطين لازب

وهجرته والهجر فيه كريم

وهجرته والهجر فيه كريم

And I skillfully fashioned its turban with clinging clay,

I clarified it with clay from Lazb

and left it alone; leaving it alone was a kindness.

وفتحته والشمس في الدلو الذي

فيه فيه يهيم

And I opened it, with the sun in Aquarius, where
