فقدfor indeed بدتhave appeared الشموسthe suns منfrom الشعاعthe radiance
And a woman said: You have slept too long—pray!
She said I overslept, pray
For the suns have appeared out of the radiance.
As the suns have emerged with rays

وقدand already أصبحتI have awoken متشحاcloaked شقاعيmy rags (uncertain reading)
So I told her: May you be bereaved! Why should I pray,
I said you’re confused, why should I pray
When I have awoken draped in my [rags?]?
When I’m adorned with my robes today
أصليdo I pray? للعقارfor the property أمor الضياعthe estates
أوor الفرشthe bedding المهدّدthe threatened (unclear in context) والمتاعand the household goods
Should I pray for property or estates,
Should I pray for possessions or loss?
Or the 'threatened' bedding and household goods,
For furnishings threatened and household dross?

Or the Slav servants? Come, tell me;
For polished servants tell me true
Or the fine-bred, desirable, swift camels,
Or for gentle maidens fleet and shrewd?

Or the fine, marked horses,
For horses, steeds marked and tamed?
Or the lovely, fair-eyed ones who enjoy patronage?
For lovely nymphs of culture famed?

And if the vizier prays, there is no harm,
If the minister prays it’s no matter
Just as the vizier drank to music.
As the minister drinks to chatter

They’re a gang with prayers writ
Prayer—not upon the naked and hungry.
Not for the poor with no benefit
