ومسائل حدب عليّ يقول لي

ومسائل حدب عليّ يقول لي

بتوَدّد وتعطّف الإشفاق

بتوَدّد وتعطّف الإشفاق

And a questioner, concerned for me, says to me

With inquiring care he says to me,

With affection and tender compassion:

With affection and kindness of sympathy,

ماذا دعاك إلا المقام بعُكبَرا

ماذا دعاك إلا المقام بعُكبَرا

وعدلت عن وطنٍ ببابِ الطاق

وعدلت عن وطنٍ ببابِ الطاق

“What drew you to dwell in ʿUkbarā,

"What led you to this place, Ukbara,

And turn away from a home at Bāb al-Ṭāq,

And turned you from a homeland with doors barred?

وتركت باب الكرخ وهو نهايةٌ

وتركت باب الكرخ وهو نهايةٌ

في الحسن فيه طرائفُ الآفاق

في الحسن فيه طرائفُ الآفاق

And leave Bāb al-Karkh, the very pinnacle

You left Bab al-Karkh though it was an end

Of beauty, holding the marvels of distant horizons:

Of perfect beauty, horizons near and far.

من كل ذي أدب عليم فاضل

من كل ذي أدب عليم فاضل

حسن الخلائق طاهر الأعراق

حسن الخلائق طاهر الأعراق

Every man of culture, learned and virtuous,

Of every refined and learned man,

Of fine character and pure lineage?”

Good morals, pure lineage, that is what you are.

قلت اكتسبت بها اعتبارا نافعا

قلت اكتسبت بها اعتبارا نافعا

وعرفت وجه مساويء الأخلاق

وعرفت وجه مساويء الأخلاق

I said: “There I gained a useful lesson,

I said: “I gained here esteem of use,

And learned the face of moral failings;

And learned the ways of flawed character.

فعدلت عما قد عرفت طريقه

فعدلت عما قد عرفت طريقه

منهم إلى خلق بلا أخلاق

منهم إلى خلق بلا أخلاق

So I turned from the ways I had come to know

So I turned from those I knew the path of,

Among them, to people without morals.”

To people of manners free of all that mar."
