بالعيب في قدمي والفقر والعدَم
And a cross-eyed fool began taunting me
A foolish hunchback has taken to taunting me
For the defect in my foot, my poverty, and my destitution.
For my limp, poverty, and lack

مستقبحا حنفي جهلا فقلت له

العيب في الرأي أدهى منه في القدم
Ignorantly finding my foot’s inward bend ugly, I said to him:
Ugly, ignorant, lame - I said to him
A defect in judgment is more grievous than one in the foot.
Flawed thinking is worse than a flawed leg
