نكرت الناس فيه على تمام

Living on has brought me to an age

In which I found people wholly unrecognizable.

وعوّل بي على قوم لئام

وعوّل بي على قوم لئام

وبعد اللؤم فاحشة الكلام

وبعد اللؤم فاحشة الكلام

And made me rely on base folk,

Who, beyond their baseness, are foul of speech.

نأوا عن كل مكرمة فصاروا

نأوا عن كل مكرمة فصاروا

حديثا للئام وللكرام

حديثا للئام وللكرام

They shunned every noble deed and became

The talk of the base and the noble alike.

ملكت عليهم طبعي ولكن

ملكت عليهم طبعي ولكن

أظاهرهم بإفشاء السلام

أظاهرهم بإفشاء السلام

I kept my temper in check with them, yet

I show them outward friendship by spreading greetings of peace.

أصلّي في جماعتهم بعقدي

أصلّي في جماعتهم بعقدي

وأقنت في البريّة والإمام

وأقنت في البريّة والإمام

I pray in their congregation, holding to my own belief,

And offer supplications against humankind and the imam.
