A fire flared on the earth after lush abundance,

and constriction overtook it after spaciousness.

عطلت سوق كل مجد وقامت

عطلت سوق كل مجد وقامت

للمخازي وللذائل سوق

للمخازي وللذائل سوق

The market for every glory fell idle, while there arose

a market for disgraceful deeds and the debased.

نافق في عراصها كل فحشٍ

نافق في عراصها كل فحشٍ

هو منّي ومن نفاق نفوق

هو منّي ومن نفاق نفوق

Every obscenity is in demand in its open spaces;

it comes from me, and from hypocrisy comes brisk trade.

والمعاني مكتومة والمخازي

والمعاني مكتومة والمخازي

فلها راية وطبل وبوق

فلها راية وطبل وبوق

And meanings are kept concealed; as for disgraceful deeds,

they have a banner, a drum, and a trumpet.

والمحقّون خاملون حيارى

والمحقّون خاملون حيارى

ولأهل الفسوق بات مروق

ولأهل الفسوق بات مروق

And those in the right are obscure and bewildered,

and for the people of vice, there is now apostasy.

In short, be alone, solitary:

upon its face there is no truly sincere friend.
