أبو الحسن الخطيب فتى حلوب

Abu al-Hasan al-Khatib is a milk-yielding youth;
Abu Al-Hassan the eloquent youth
udders acknowledge the superiority of his milk-flow.
His bounties do breasts draw near
حلوبyielding abundant milk فيin الفضولidle chatter وليسand is not شداunclear as written
حلوب في الفضول وليس شدا
أناملهhis fingers ومعand despite هذاthis رقيعa shameless fool
أنامله ومع هذا رقيع
Milk-yielding in idle chatter, but not [unclear in the text]—
Sweet-tongued yet no busybody
his fingers; and for all that, he is a shameless fool.
His fingers nimble and quick to write
بطيءslow فيin المكارمnoble deeds لاnot يراهاhe sees them
بطيء في المكارم لا يراها
وفيand in هدمdemolishing العلىeminence جزلvigorous سريعswift
وفي هدم العلى جزل سريع
Slow in noble deeds, he does not see them;
Slow in bestowing favors unnoticed
yet in demolishing eminence, vigorous and swift.
But swift at ruining the sublime
يغبّvisits at intervals المستراحthe privy الدهرthroughout life طولاat length
يغبّ المستراح الدهر طولا
فماso he does not يخرىshit مخافةfor fear لاnot يحوعunclear; probably 'goes hungry'
فما يخرى مخافة لا يحوع
He visits the privy at long intervals throughout his life;
He shuns rest throughout his life
so he does not shit, for fear he will not [go hungry].
