قدindeed لبّبseized by the collar الجهلignorance والتفكيكand muddle-headedness أطواقهhis collars
قد لبّب الجهل والتفكيك أطواقه
A neighbor, yet the most distant of men in station.
Ignorance and muddle-headedness have seized his collars.
مؤيّسbeyond hope العقلin intellect لوif عاشرتهyou kept his company نسقاcontinuously
مؤيّس العقل لو عاشرته نسقا
تسعينninety عاماyears لماwould not أحمدتyou found praiseworthy أخلاقهhis character
تسعين عاما لما أحمدت أخلاقه
Hopeless of mind—were you to keep his company continuously
For ninety years, you would not find his character praiseworthy.
تيقّنhe knew for certain النارthe Fire بعدafter الموتdeath منزلةas an abode
تيقّن النار بعد الموت منزلة
فاختارso he chose منfrom سائرall الأكفانthe shrouds حرّاقهhis tinder
فاختار من سائر الأكفان حرّاقه
He knew for certain that the Fire would be his abode after death,
So, of all shrouds, he chose tinder for his own.
