    I love my little daughter, and I wish I had

    Buried my little daughter at the bottom of a grave.

    مخافة أن تذوق الذل بعدي

    And I do not seek her burial for its own sake, but

    For fear she might taste humiliation after I am gone;

    For fear she might end up with a base man,

    Who would then revile my father and curse my grandfather.

    So, if only God would grant her happiness through death,

    Though she is the dearest of all people to me,

    And follow that, for me, with a true-hearted mother,

    So she might keep her daughter company, while I live alone.
