They said, “The festival has arrived.” I said: the festival's custom

Is to grieve the poor and gladden the well-to-do.

The rich man goes out on the festival morning in delight,

While the needy man is in worry and privation.

They said, “And you?” I said: poverty is my companion,

And ill fortune is keeper of my ledger and my affairs.

Poverty has settled in my wooden bowl and my inkwell,

As jinn—the jinn of houses—settle in houses.

I have grown accustomed to my poverty; even if it shunned me,

And I plunged into the well, it would not turn away from the well.

Even if I settled at Kīnāʾī, it would have

No excuse, in my eyes, for failing to visit.

My brother, my intimate friend, my partner, and my support,

And my counselor, my advancement, and my setback.

So praise be to God—unceasing praise forever—

Not the praise of one seeking redress, deprived of livelihood.

A slip of paper holds the deed to my livelihood, and I have

A writ turning wealth away, for a broken thousand.

My share of the festival, after the reward, is its mercy,

Along with dust and bread eaten with patience.

I go out for the festival in a downtrodden man's clothes,

While people at the festival wear fine cloth and bleached linen.

How far apart are one hemmed in and one drinking morning wine,

Amid luxury, with the drum beating and the lute's treble string sounding!

Oh, if only I were among the Nabataean peasants of a village,

At Dayr Qunnā, with yellow-gold dinars of my own,

And were not a Nahshalite of Banū Muḍar,

And were counted among the sons of Sābūr!

I am harshly cast aside, and given nothing for my knowledge

And my keen grasp of “extended” and “shortened” nouns.
