تخلّ عن الورى كرما وظرفا

تخلّ عن الورى كرما وظرفا

فقد فسدوا وصار الوصل مقتا

فقد فسدوا وصار الوصل مقتا

Withdraw from humankind with nobility and refinement,

Abandon people with generosity and grace

For they have grown corrupt, and fellowship has turned to loathing.

For they are corrupt and association has become disdained

ينافقك الصديق وفيه مكر

ينافقك الصديق وفيه مكر

ويبدي ظاهراً مقة وسمتا

ويبدي ظاهراً مقة وسمتا

Your friend acts hypocritically toward you, harboring guile,

The friend flatters you, yet plots against you

And outwardly displays affection and decorum.

And outwardly displays affection and beauty

فكن فردا وحيدا سامريا

فكن فردا وحيدا سامريا

ولا ترد الوصال وأنت أنتا

ولا ترد الوصال وأنت أنتا

So be solitary, alone, like al-Samiri,

So be alone and solitary, lost in your thoughts

And do not seek fellowship while you are who you are.

Do not reciprocate friendship when you are yourself

فأكثر من ترى يشكو صديقا

فأكثر من ترى يشكو صديقا

وما عاداك إلا من عرفتا

وما عاداك إلا من عرفتا

For most of those you see complain of a friend,

For most of those you see complain of a friend

And none has been hostile to you except someone you have known.

And none will support you except those you know
