يلين إذا ما حل يوما بعكبرا
And every youth with haughtiness and pride in him
Every youth has folly and chivalry
softens when, one day, he arrives in ʿUkbarā.
He mellows when one day in Akbar comes

وعشّاقه يعطونه ما تخيّرا
He is spoken to on the days he comes and is wary,
It's said his days will come and he'll beware
and his lovers give him whatever he chooses.
And his lovers give him what they chose

إذا ذاق ماء السؤر صلى وعفرا
But this lasts only that day; then, on the morrow,
It's but his day, then tomorrow anon
once he tastes the leftover water, he prays and rubs his face in the dust.
When he tastes misfortune's water, he prays and rubs his brow
