A bachelor, his key in his hand.
A bachelor whose key is in his hand
Time's vicissitudes have sapped his strength.
Time has turned its back in his shoulder
يتبّواhe inhabits منزلاa dwelling شعثاdilapidated
يتبّوا منزلا شعثا
شرّworse منهthan it ضيقnarrowness of ملتحدهhis grave
شرّ منه ضيق ملتحده
He inhabits a dilapidated dwelling;
Seeking an unkempt dwelling
Worse than it is the narrowness of his grave.
Worse than it is the tightness of his means
يشتكيhe complains of ضرّاhardship ومسكنةand poverty
يشتكي ضرّا ومسكنة
هيit خيرbetter منthan ضنىwasting of جسدهhis body
هي خير من ضنى جسده
He complains of hardship and poverty;
Complaining of harm and tribulation
It is better than the wasting of his body.
It's better than the disdain of his body
مفردٌalone لاnot يستريحhe finds comfort إلىin
مفردٌ لا يستريح إلى
مؤنسa companion فيin يومهhis day وغدهand his tomorrow
مؤنس في يومه وغده
Alone, he finds no comfort in
Alone with no comfort of
A companion, today and tomorrow.
A companion in his day or tomorrow
كمhow many a صريعstricken man باتspent the night فيin كمدanguish
كم صريع بات في كمد
قدindeed شجيwas choked بالغيظwith rage منbecause of ولدهhis child
قد شجي بالغيظ من ولده
How many a stricken man has spent the night in anguish,
How many slain spent the night in anxiety
Choked with rage because of his child.
Wounded by the anger of his son
