قالواthey said نراكwe see you بلاwithout أهلfamily ولاnor ولدchild
قالوا نراك بلا أهل ولا ولد
ولاnor نراكwe see you تحبّyou love الجمعaccumulation والعدداand quantity
ولا نراك تحبّ الجمع والعددا
They said: We see you without family or child,
nor do we see you fond of accumulation and abundance.
فقلتso I said قولthe words of امرىءa man مستبصرclear-sighted فطنperceptive
فقلت قول امرىء مستبصر فطن
قدhad راضهdisciplined him الدهرtime حتىuntil كاسhe became shrewd فاجتهداthen he strove
قد راضه الدهر حتى كاس فاجتهدا
I replied with the words of a clear-sighted, perceptive man,
whom time had disciplined until he grew shrewd and strove diligently:
ماذاwhat أضافadded إليto me الدهرtime منof تُلَدٍinherited wealth
ماذا أضاف إلي الدهر من تُلَدٍ
حتّىso that يضيفit should add إليto me الأهلfamily والولداand children
حتّى يضيف إلي الأهل والولدا
What inherited wealth has time brought me,
that it should bring me family and children?
