معز الدولة الوهنا

ء يوهنها ويفقرها

ء يوهنها ويفقرها

Muʿizz al-Dawla, exalter of the feeble state,

The state's glory fades

weakens her and impoverishes her.

As it weakens and impoverishes it

وناصرها على وجل

وناصرها على وجل

يزجّيها ويحصرها

يزجّيها ويحصرها

And her champion, in fear,

And its supporter in distress

urges her onward and hems her in.

Sweeps it away and besieges it

فلا هو مؤيس منها

فلا هو مؤيس منها

ولا الأقواتُ تحدرها

ولا الأقواتُ تحدرها

So he does not despair of her,

So he is not hopeless of it

nor do provisions fatten her.

Nor do provisions diminish it

ولا هذا بقوّته

ولا هذا بقوّته

ولا ذا بعد ينصرها

ولا ذا بعد ينصرها

Neither this one, with his strength,

Neither is this by its strength

nor that one any longer comes to her aid.

Nor that after helping it

وأرواح العباد الجو

وأرواح العباد الجو

ع نحو الموت يحشوها

ع نحو الموت يحشوها

And the souls of the people—hunger

And the spirits of obedient men

drives them toward death.

Towards death cramming them

لقد ترك الوجوه الجو

لقد ترك الوجوه الجو

ع تعرفها وتنكرها

ع تعرفها وتنكرها

Indeed, hunger has left faces

Indeed, it has left the hungry faces

that you recognize and yet do not.

To recognize and deny them

وليس لها سوى الرحم

وليس لها سوى الرحم

ن بعد الكسر يجبرها

ن بعد الكسر يجبرها

And she has none but the All-Merciful

And it has nothing but mercy

to mend her after the breaking.

After breaking to mend it
