عركتنيworked me over الأيامthe days عركthe working-over of الدابغthe tanner
فلبستُso I donned عنهاagainst them ثوبa robe حلمforbearance سايغagreeable
The days worked me over as a tanner works a hide.
The days have buffeted me, buffeting of the tanner,
So I donned, against them, a robe of gentle forbearance.
So I donned a robe of mature, sweet-tasting patience,
وأرانيَand showed me القمرانthe sun and moon فيin كرّيهماtheir recurring courses
عبراًlessons ندِقّare too subtle (likely تدقّ) علىfor البيبthe discerning person (likely اللبيب) البالغِmature
And the sun and moon, in their recurring courses, showed me
And the two moons have shown me in their darkness
lessons too subtle for the mature, discerning mind.
A clear, elegant tent pitched over the high ground,
وخبطتُand I floundered محترفاseeking a livelihood فضاقتso became constrained حيلتيmy resourcefulness
وجلستand I sat جلسةthe sitting posture of عاجزٍa helpless person أوor زائغone who strays
And I floundered, seeking a livelihood, and my options narrowed.
And I have tried my hand in earnest, but my wits failed me,
And I sat in the posture of one helpless or astray.
So I sat, helpless, hesitant, or distraught,
ووجدتand I found حظّيmy fortune ناكلاshrinking back عنfrom ناكلone who shrinks back
ورميتand I was struck منby دهريmy fate بنجمٍwith a star دامغcrushing
And I found my fortune shrinking back from one who shrinks back.
And found my fortune being gnawed by constant gnawer,
And my fate struck me with a crushing star.
And I was struck by my fate with a piercing star.
