زمنٌtime وثقتI trusted بهin it فخاناso it betrayed
زمنٌ وثقت به فخانا
بذلit offered العنايةcare ثمّthen باناit departed
بذل العناية ثمّ بانا
Time, in which I trusted, betrayed me.
A time I trusted, but it betrayed me
It offered care, then departed.
I gave it care, but it became clear
بعدafter التواصلcompanionship خاننيit betrayed me
بعد التواصل خانني
فطلبتso I sought منfrom يدهits hand الأماناsafety
فطلبت من يده الأمانا
After companionship, it betrayed me,
After connecting, it deceived me
so I sought safety from its hand.
So I sought safety from its hand
خصّit favored اللئيمthe base man بماwith what أشتهاhe desired (word continued)
خصّ اللئيم بما أشتها
هit (attached object) وألزمand imposed upon الحرّthe noble man الهواناhumiliation
ه وألزم الحرّ الهوانا
It favored the base man with what he desired,
The vile focused on their desires
and imposed humiliation upon the noble.
While the noble were disgraced
فشكوتso I complained ماwhat ألقاهI suffer it منfrom
فشكوت ما ألقاه من
هit (completing 'from it') إلىto أخa brother فيin الخيرgoodness كاناhe had been
ه إلى أخ في الخير كانا
So I complained of what I suffer from
I complained of what it did
it to a brother who had been good.
To a brother good in deed
فكأنّهso it was as though he بعدafter النعيbliss (word continued)
فكأنّه بعد النعي
مcompletes 'bliss' فذلّthen he was humbled فيin يدهits hand ولاناand yielded
م فذلّ في يده ولانا
It seemed that, after bliss,
But it was as if after the eulogy
he was humbled in its hand and yielded.
He weakened and gave up
وشكاand he complained غليّunclear; possibly 'to me' (إليّ) فلمand he did not يزلcease
وشكا غليّ فلم يزل
يهجوhe reviles خلائقهits character traits عياناopenly
يهجو خلائقه عيانا
And he complained [perhaps to me], and never ceased
And complained of hardship so he never stopped
openly reviling its character.
Publicly insulting all creations
لاno والذيby Him who خلقcreated الزمانtime وماand whatever
لا والذي خلق الزمان وما
سواهbesides it وقدand indeed أباناmade clear
سواه وقد أبانا
No, by Him who created time and all
No, by He who created eras and all
besides it, and has made things plain:
Else, and has made clear
ماnot سرّنيit pleased me فيin حاجةa need
ما سرّني في حاجة
إلاexcept بلاناit afflicted us أوor قلاناit hated us
إلا بلانا أو قلانا
It never pleased me in any need,
Nothing pleased me in need
but only afflicted us or hated us.
Except so-and-so or such-and-such
يجبىis collected إليّto me خراجهُits tribute
يجبى إليّ خراجهُ
رغداabundantly وإنand even if يابىit refuses حماناour protected land
رغدا وإن يابى حمانا
Its tribute is collected for me
Who pays me tribute willingly
in abundance, even if it rejects our protected land.
