فميت الهوى في العاشقين شهيد
Moaning and lamentation in the darkness; if I die,
Moans and laments in the dark, though if I die
Then one who dies of love is a martyr among lovers.
The passion in lovers is a martyr indeed

صموت وكتمان وشوق وحسرة

وصدّ حبيب إن ذا لشديد
Silence, concealment, longing, and heartache,
Silence and concealment, longing and sorrow
And a beloved's rejection—this is harsh indeed.
And a beloved's rejection - how severe!

أسائل عمّا بي فأجحد حبّها

وتخلقني الأيام وهي جديد
I am questioned about what ails me, so I deny my love for her.
I deny my love though asked what ails me
And the days wear me out, while they remain new.
Time passes me by, each day renewed

يحنّ فؤادي واللسان جحود
And were it not for the eye's tears, they would not know what
And if not for my eyes' tears none would know
My heart yearns for, while my tongue denies it.
My heart's ache though my tongue denies
