إذا اعتنق الوقار المرء أضحى

أسيرا أو على خلق الأسير

أسيرا أو على خلق الأسير

When solemnity embraces a man, he becomes

When dignity embraces a man, he becomes

a captive, or has a captive’s disposition.

A prisoner, or takes on a prisoner's nature.

وإن خلع العذار غدا أميرا

وإن خلع العذار غدا أميرا

سرورا أو أسرّ من الأمير

سرورا أو أسرّ من الأمير

And if he casts off the bridle, he becomes a prince

And if he casts off his rags, he rules like a prince -

in joy, or happier than the prince.

Joyous, though once poorer than any prince.
