إذا هممت بشرّ لا أنفّذهُ

خوفا من الله أو ضربا من الكرم

خوفا من الله أو ضربا من الكرم

If I intend evil, I do not carry it out,

If I intend evil I do not commit

out of fear of God, or as an act of nobility.

Fearing God, or being nobly struck

وإن هممت بخير لا ينهنهني

وإن هممت بخير لا ينهنهني

فيه التلوّم غشفاقا من العدم

فيه التلوّم غشفاقا من العدم

And if I intend good, I am not held back

And if I intend good, I am not deterred

by hesitation over it for fear of destitution.

By blame, out of pity for non-existence
