إذا ملك الفتى هنّا ودنّا

ومقردة وملفسة وصن
When the young man owns a hann and an earthenware jar,
If a youth has here a tent and furnishing,
and a miqrada, a milfasa, and a covered basket,
A pipe and striped cloak and turban too,
وجبّرةand a jabbara (uncertain item) وغربالاand a sieve إذاwhen ماan emphatic particle
وجبّرة وغربالا إذا ما
رآهsees him عدّوّهhis enemy يوماone day يحنhe moans
رآه عدّوّه يوما يحن
and a jabbara and a sieve—whenever
A pitcher and a sieve when enemies see,
his enemy sees him one day, he moans—
Some day he'll grieve and mourn for you,
وكارجةand a karija (uncertain item) منof البرقthe lightning اليمانيYemeni
وكارجة من البرق اليماني
قطينيةcotton-made (uncertain reading) وكانand there was لهfor him مسنa whetstone
قطينية وكان له مسن
and a karija of Yemeni lightning,
With Yemen bow so bright and strong,
cotton-made, and he has a whetstone,
A coat of mail and good keen brand,
ولاحand appeared علىon ذراعيهhis two forearms سطورlines
ولاح على ذراعيه سطور
وسبعاand two beasts of prey غابةof a forest والكركدنand the rhinoceros
وسبعا غابة والكركدن
and lines appear on his two forearms,
Bracelets engraved upon his arms,
and two forest beasts and the rhinoceros,
A wolf pack and a vulture land,
وكانand there was لهfor him محاشيّa mahashi (uncertain item) مليحhandsome
وكان له محاشيّ مليح
خلاسيّof mixed stock إذاwhen ماan emphatic particle حزّit cuts رنit rings
خلاسيّ إذا ما حزّ رن
and he has a handsome mahashi,
And handsome pages dressed so fair
mixed-bred, which rings whenever it cuts,
Who turn whene’er he gives command,
وأمشىand made walk خلفهbehind him كلباa dog هروشاquarrelsome
وأمشى خلفه كلبا هروشا
لهit has ذاتa nature نعوسsleepy بهwithin it وسنdrowsiness
له ذات نعوس به وسن
and makes a quarrelsome dog walk behind him,
A hound that snaps at all who pass,
with a sleepy nature, drowsiness within it,
With teeth protruding from his mouth,
يلايقis suitably matched فيin العبارةthe expression والمعانيand the meanings
يلايق في العبارة والمعاني
ويأتيand brings الدرّthe pearls يحويهcontains them منa mann (weight measure; uncertain reading)
ويأتي الدرّ يحويه من
he is apt in expression and meanings,
Then he deserves in word and deed
and brings pearls, which a mann contains.
The shining pearls that he can stand.
