ماwhat سرّbrought joy ضرّcaused harm ويومand a day القصفrevelry يتبعهfollows it
ما سرّ ضرّ ويوم القصف يتبعه
بعدafter التنعّمindulgence فيin أعقابهits wake الندمregret
بعد التنعّم في أعقابه الندم
What brings joy brings harm; a day of revelry is followed
What is the secret of harm and a day of bombardment followed
after indulgence, by regret in its wake.
By regret in its aftermath after pleasure?
وكلand every شبعsatiety وكلand every مطعمةmeal
وكل شبع وكل مطعمة
يفنىpasses away ويبقىand remains علىupon المستعصمal-Mustaʿṣim الكرمgenerosity
يفنى ويبقى على المستعصم الكرم
And all satiety and every meal
All satiety and every delicacy
pass away, while generosity remains incumbent on al-Mustaʿṣim.
Perishes, but generosity endures for the steadfast
