إلفان متّفقان شتّهما الردى
بعدafter المقامdwelling فأصبحاso they both became شتّاناfar apart
بعد المقام فأصبحا شتّانا
Two companions in harmony were parted by death;
Two harmonious companions, whom fate has torn asunder
after dwelling together, they became far apart.
After dwelling together, they are now far apart
خانتbetrayed عهودكyour pledges أحزاناsorrows
خانت عهودك أحزانا
منfrom بعدماafter حفظتwere kept عليكfor you زماناfor a time
من بعدما حفظت عليك زمانا
Your pledges betrayed sorrows,
Your promises have betrayed our sorrows
after they had been kept for you for a time.
After you kept your word for so long
والشيءand the thing عزّwas precious إذاwhen علىabove طلابهits seekers
والشيء عزّ إذا على طلابه
فإذاand when أناخalighted عليكupon you عزّwas precious فهاناthen became cheap
فإذا أناخ عليك عزّ فهانا
A thing is precious when beyond its seekers’ reach;
Anything is hard to obtain for its seekers
but once it alights upon you, what was precious becomes cheap.
But once honor alights upon you, it becomes easy
وعليكand upon you بعديafter me هونmake light of ماwhat استصعبتهyou found it difficult
وعليك بعدي هون ما استصعبته
فكأنso it is as though كلevery مكوّنcreated thing ماnot كاناhad existed
فكأن كل مكوّن ما كانا
And after me, make light of what you found difficult,
Regard what troubled you after me as insignificant
as though every created thing had never been.
As if everything past did not exist
هيit ساعةan hour فإذاand when تسلمهاreceived it مضىpassed
هي ساعة فإذا تسلمها مضى
وأخذتand you took عنهfrom it منfrom الرجوعreturning أماناassurance
وأخذت عنه من الرجوع أمانا
It is an hour: once received, it is gone,
An hour comes and when it arrives, it departs
and you have taken from it assurance of no return.
And you gain from its passing a sense of security
ليسis not الغبينةloss فوتmissing out on كلevery غنيمةgain
ليس الغبينة فوت كل غنيمة
فيin الأرضthe earth ممّاof what فاتتeluded الإنساناhumankind
في الأرض ممّا فاتت الإنسانا
Loss does not lie in missing every gain
It’s not misfortune to miss every prize
on earth that has eluded humankind.
On earth that eludes humankind
إنindeed الغبينةloss فيin انقلابكyour returning رائداًseeking
إن الغبينة في انقلابك رائداً
وطناa homeland يسرّdelights فلاand so not تحِسُّyou feel أماناsafety
وطنا يسرّ فلا تحِسُّ أمانا
Indeed, loss lies in your returning to seek
True misfortune is when you seek refuge
a homeland that delights, yet you feel no safety.
