كتابا قراه بالإشارة من وجد
I wrote to him with tears upon my cheek,
I wrote to him with tears on my cheek
a letter of longing that he read by signs.
A letter he read with a gesture of passion

كما أنت كن إني مقيم على العهد
He answered with a glance of his eye, fearing a spiteful foe:
He answered with a glance of shy eyes
“Stay as you are; I remain faithful to the pledge.”
As if saying: Be as you are, I keep my vow
فقلتso I said لهto him باللحظwith a glance قفstop ليfor me علىat الجفاcoldness
فقلت له باللحظ قف لي على الجفا
فإنfor indeed الجفاcoldness أو‘easier’ (first fragment) طا‘easier’ (second fragment) عليّon me منthan الفقدloss
فإن الجفا أو طا عليّ من الفقد
So I said to him with a glance, “Go no further than coldness toward me,
So I told him with a glance: stop this estrangement
for coldness is easier on me than loss.”
For estrangement or death to me is the same
