When a scholar dies in a town,

The loftiest part of its land dwindles.

And when he dies that day, the latter announces

    The former's death to himself.

The beauty of men lies in their wise ones,

And their scholar is the fairest among them.

    فإن فقدوهم معا زلزلوا

    The scholars of the age are humankind's mainstay;

So if they lose them all at once, they are shaken.

    And a man's reciters—he has a rank.

This one excels, and that one sinks lower.

Just as ignorance is practiced among people,

And everyone thinks himself the wisest.
