ومن وقوفي بموقف الندم
Enough for me of rearing others and of retainers,
My wisdom and philosophy are enough for me,
and of standing in the place of regret.
As well as my standing in regretful remorse.

وحسن فهمي فلامة القلم
My wisdom and philosophy were not worth—
Neither my reasoning nor my good understanding
nor was my keen understanding—a shaving of a pen.
Are to blame for the stroke of my pen.

والنار لا تنتضى من الظلم
I reared someone, keeping him in reserve as a supporting arm;
I raised a person, supporting him as an asset.
and fire cannot be struck from snow.
But oppression is a fire that is never extinguished.

When at last he reached youth, matured, and grew,
When he grew up, matured, and prospered,
and became shameless in seeking gain,
And started earning without humility,

preying—the spiteful wretch—just as
He preyed on the weak and helpless
a wolf devours the largest sheep,
As a wolf preys on the biggest sheep.

He left me and inclined towards deceit,
pelting me with arrows from close range.
Shooting me with arrows from among the nations.

He denies my kindness of old; and whoever
He denies my old kindness, yet whoever
denies a benefactor's kindness is blamed.
Denies the kindness of a benefactor is wicked.

If my mind had been sound, I would not have accepted
to choose the wasting of my sickness over my health.
To choose for my health the ill of my illness.

But I imitated kings and the sons
of great merchants and non-Arabs.
Of big businessmen and foreigners.

If I do the like again, my beard will not be safe
for my beard from the tyranny of the shears.
From being grasped by hot tongs.
