أَحَلتِyou shifted عَلَيَّonto me الذَنبَthe blame لَماwhen مَلَلتِنيyou tired of me
أَحَلتِ عَلَيَّ الذَنبَ لَما مَلَلتِني
وَغَيرِيَand someone other than me لَوif أَنصَفتِyou had been fair قَدindeed رَكِبَcommitted الذَنباthe wrong
وَغَيرِيَ لَو أَنصَفتِ قَد رَكِبَ الذَنبا
You laid the blame on me when you grew tired of me.
You blamed me for my boredom when it was you who had wearied me,
Yet someone other than me, had you been fair, had committed the wrong.
Yet another in my place would also have committed the same wrong.
أُقِرُّI admit لَكَمto you بِالذَنبِto the fault مِنّيon my part مَخافَةًfor fear
أُقِرُّ لَكَم بِالذَنبِ مِنّي مَخافَةً
مِنَof الهَجرِabandonment لَمّاwhen رُمتِyou sought أَنto تُخلِقيyou wear out الحُبّاlove
مِنَ الهَجرِ لَمّا رُمتِ أَن تُخلِقي الحُبّا
I admit to you that the fault is mine, for fear
I confess to you my wrong out of fear of estrangement -
of abandonment, when you sought to wear love threadbare.
When you had decided to abandon me, refusing to show love.
