خَشيتِyou feared صُدوديmy turning away لَيسَis not ذاكَthat بِكائِنٍgoing to happen
خَشيتِ صُدودي لَيسَ ذاكَ بِكائِنٍ
أَتىcame دُونَهُin its way حُبٌّlove لِعَينَيَّfor my eyes مُسهِرَkeeping awake
أَتى دُونَهُ حُبٌّ لِعَينَيَّ مُسهِرَ
You feared my turning away; that will not happen.
My fears my coldness would not see undone
You feared my turning away, yet that is not to be,
A love that keeps my eyes awake has stood in its way.
Were followed by a love sleep stole from mine eyes
For a love has intervened, rendering my eyes sleepless.
فَلوso if أَنَّthat ليfor me صَبراًpatience لَقُلتُI would say لَعَلَّنيperhaps I
فَلو أَنَّ لي صَبراً لَقُلتُ لَعَلَّني
أَصُدُّI turn away وَلكِنand yet لَستُI am not وَاللَهِby God أَصبِرُI endure
أَصُدُّ وَلكِن لَستُ وَاللَهِ أَصبِرُ
So if I had patience, I would say: perhaps I
And had I patience I could say maybe
If I possessed any patience, I might have said, "Perchance
could turn away—but, by God, I cannot endure.
I'm cold but, by God, patient I'm not
I shall turn away," but by God, I have no patience.
