أَخلَفتِyou broke ياO سَيِّدَتيmy lady وَعديmy promise
نَعَمyes وَقَدand already غُيِّرتِyou have been changed مِنfrom بَعديafter me
You broke your promise to me, my lady.
You broke my promise, my lady, and have changed since we parted;
Yes, and you have been changed since I left.
While I have never ceased, since we broke, to languish in grief and pain.
وَهاand here أَناI مِنfrom بَعدِكُمafter you لَمnot أَزَلcease
فيin دَولَةِthe reign of الأَحزَانِsorrows وَالوَجدِand yearning
And here I am, since your departure, still
Oh, my lady, how wide now the difference that lies between us!
in the reign of sorrows and yearning.
How far your love from the love I bear you!
شَتّانَhow far apart ياO سَيِّدَتيmy lady بَينَناwe are
شَتّانَhow far apart مِنfrom وُدِّكُمُyour love وُدّيmy love
How far apart we are, my lady!
For you sport and enjoy yourselves,
How far my love is from yours!
While the tears course down my cheeks.
إِذsince صِرتُمُyou have become تَلهُونyou amuse yourselves يَهنيكُمُmay it gladden you
وَدَمعُand the tears of عَينَيَّmy two eyes عَلىupon خَدّيmy cheek
Since you have taken to amusement—may you enjoy it—
while tears from my eyes are upon my cheek.
