ماwhat تَأمُرينَdo you command بِذيfor one with مُراقَبَةٍwatchfulness
ما تَأمُرينَ بِذي مُراقَبَةٍ
يُخفيhe conceals هَواكِlove for you وَيُظهِرُand displays الهَجراestrangement
يُخفي هَواكِ وَيُظهِرُ الهَجرا
What do you bid a watchful man do,
What do you command me, with one who is observant
who hides his love for you and displays estrangement?
Who hides your love and shows aloofness
مُتَرَبِّصٌone waiting expectantly سُدَّتwere blocked مَذاهِبُهُhis paths
مُتَرَبِّصٌ سُدَّت مَذاهِبُهُ
أَفنىhe spent بِطولِthrough the length of رَجائِكِhope for you الدَهراa lifetime
أَفنى بِطولِ رَجائِكِ الدَهرا
He waits, his paths all barred;
Lying in wait, his paths are blocked
he has spent a lifetime in long hope of you.
He wasted time in hope of you, forever
وَإِذاand whenever تَذَكَّرَهاhe remembered her وَلَمand did not يَرَهاsee her
وَإِذا تَذَكَّرَها وَلَم يَرَها
جَعَلَhe made الصُدودَaloofness مِنَfrom الهَوىlove سِتراa veil
جَعَلَ الصُدودَ مِنَ الهَوى سِترا
And whenever he remembers her but does not see her,
And if he remembers her, but does not see her
he makes aloofness a veil for love.
He makes barriers of passion a veil
