أَتَيناكُمwe came to you وَقَدand indeed كُنّاwe were غِضاباangry
نُصالِحُكُمwe make peace with you وَماand not نَبغيwe seek العِتاباreproach
We came to you, though we had been angry.
We came to you though we were wroth,
We make peace with you and seek no reproach.
To make peace, not keen to chide.
وَقَدand indeed كُنّاwe had اِجتَنَبناكُمavoided you فَعُدناso we returned
إِلَيكُمto you حينَwhen لَمdid not نُطِقِwe could bear اِجتِناباstaying away
We had kept away from you, so we returned
We had held aloof from you but came
To you when we could not bear staying away.
Back, since we could not abide

كِتابٌa letter لاnot تَرُدُّshe sends back لَهُto it جَواباa reply
Since when has Zalum, on receiving
Estrangement. When did the unjust,
A letter, failed to send a reply?
Once a letter comes, refuse reply?
تَناسانيpretended to forget me الحَبيبُthe beloved وَمَلَّand grew tired of وَصليmy company
وَصَدَّand turned away فَلاso no رَسولَmessenger وَلاand no كِتاباletter
The beloved pretended to forget me and grew tired of my company,
The lover forgets me, tires of union;
And turned away—so no messenger and no letter.
He spurns messenger, message, and scribe.
