    وَعِندَكِ لَو أَرَدتِ لَهُ شِهابُ

    Union with you is dark, clouded with uncertainty;

yet you have, if you wished, a blazing flame to light it.

And I have been burdened with such love for you that, if

it were shared among the people of the earth, they would turn gray.

Come to your senses; stop reproaching me about people—

you were present for your share of my heart, while they were absent.

People suspect me and them, while you

have the purest affection and its very essence.

And whenever I wrote to you, complaining,

you wronged me and said, "There is no reply for him."

So I lived, nourishing myself on wishes,

saying, "For every wayward one there is a return."

And it came to this: whenever a letter from me reached

you, to win your tenderness, the letter was cast aside.

And you prepared to sever ties with me; then came

abuse from you in answer to my greeting.

And indeed, affection can hardly endure

when groundless blame and reproach abound.

I lowered my wing for whoever seeks refuge with you,

yet you meet me as though you were angry.
