اليَومَtoday لِلناسِfor the people عيدٌa festival يَفرَحونَthey rejoice بِهِin it
وَلَيسَand there is not ليfor me مِنهُof it إِلّاexcept الهَمُّworry والحَزَنُand sorrow
Today the people have a festival in which they rejoice;
Today is a holiday that brings joy to people
And I have nothing of it but worry and sorrow.
But for me it brings only sorrow and gloom
إِذاwhenever تَلِفتُI waste away اِشتِياقاًwith longing زادَنيadds to my كَمَداًanguish
أَلّاthat ... not يَكونَis قَريباًnear مِنِّيَto me السَكَنُthe source of solace
Whenever I waste away with longing, it deepens my anguish
When I longingly look around, it increases my yearning
That the one who is my solace is not near me.
If only my home were near!
فَمَنso whoever يَكُنmay have قَرَّfound rest عَيناًin his eye أَوor رَجاhoped for فَرَجاًrelief
وَلَذَّand tasted pleasure أَوor باتَspent the night يَأويsettles in عَينَهُhis eye الوَسَنُdrowsiness
So whoever has found rest for his eye, or hoped for relief,
Whoever has found joy or hoped for relief
And tasted pleasure, or spent the night with drowsiness settling in his eye—
And relished it or rested his eyes in slumber
فَلَستُso I am not ذاكَthat one بِحَمدِwith praise to اللَهِGod تَمنَعُنيbars me

I am not that man, praise be to God; I am barred
I am not, by the grace of God, denied it
From that by Ẓalūm and a fortune that time has thwarted.
By injustice or a destiny the times have opposed
