قالواthey said خُراسانُKhurasan أَقصىthe farthest ماwhat يُرادُis intended بِناfor us
ثُمَّthen القُفولُthe return home فَقَدand indeed جِئناwe have come خُراساناKhurasan
They said, “Khurasan is the farthest we are meant to go,
then the return home”—and now we have reached Khurasan.
مَتىwhen يُكونُwill come to pass الَّذيthat which أَرجوI hope for وَآمُلُهُand hope for it
أَمّاas for الَّذيthat which كُنتُI used to أَخشاهُfear it فَقَدthen indeed كاناhas happened
When will what I hope for and long for come to pass?
As for what I feared, it has already come to pass.
ماhow أَقدَرَpowerful اللَهَGod أَنto يُدنيbring near عَلىdespite شَحَطٍgreat distance
جيرانَthe neighbors of دِجلَةَthe Tigris مِنto جيرانِthe neighbors of جَيجاناJayjan
How great is God's power to bring close, despite great distance,
the neighbors of the Tigris to the neighbors of Jayjan!
عَينُthe eye of الزَمانِTime أَصابَتناhas struck us فَلاso may it never نَظَرَتsee
وَعُذِّبَتand may it be tormented بِفُنونِwith the varieties of الهَجرِseparation أَلواناin many forms
Time's eye has struck us—may it never see,
and may it be tormented by separation in its many forms!
ياoh لَيتَif only مَنthe one whom نَتَمَنّىwe long for عِندَduring خَلوَتِناour solitude
إِذاwhen خَلاis alone خَلوَةًin solitude يَوماًone day تَمنّاناwould long for us
Would that the one we long for in our solitude
would, when alone one day, long for us.
