وَطالَand grew long بِهِfor him عَلىin النَأيِremoteness المَغيبُthe absence
The stranger wept and lamented his estrangement.
The stranger wept and complained of his estrangement,
And his absence, far away, dragged on.
And his remoteness from home grew long.
وَماand not هَذاthis بِأَعجَبَany more astonishing مِنthan خُروجيmy departure
وَتَركيand my leaving بَلدَةًa town فيهاin it الحَبيبُthe beloved
And this is no more astonishing than my departure
Yet this is no stranger than my own departure,
And my leaving a town where the beloved dwells.
When I left a town where lived my beloved!
تَهيجُstirs لِيَfor me الصَبابَةَlonging كُلُّevery ريحٍwind
وَيَهديand brings ليto me نَسيمَكُمُyour breeze الجَنوبُthe south wind
Every wind stirs longing in me,
Every breeze that blows rekindles my longing,
And the south wind brings me your breeze.
And your soft southern wind brings me sleep.
