عَلامَةُthe sign of كُلِّevery اِثنَينِtwo people بَينَهُماbetween them هَوىًlove
عَلامَةُ كُلِّ اِثنَينِ بَينَهُما هَوىً
عِتابُهُماtheir mutual reproach فيover كُلِّevery حَقٍّright وَباطِلِand wrong
عِتابُهُما في كُلِّ حَقٍّ وَباطِلِ
The sign of any two with love between them
The mark of every two between whom there is love
Is their mutual reproach over everything, right or wrong.
Is their reproach in everything right and false
لِسانُهُماtheir speech حَربٌwar وَسِلمٌand peace هَواهُماtheir love
لِسانُهُما حَربٌ وَسِلمٌ هَواهُما
يَجودانِthey both give freely شَوقاًout of longing بِالدُموعِwith tears الهواملِfreely flowing
يَجودانِ شَوقاً بِالدُموعِ الهواملِ
Their speech is war, yet their love is peace;
Their tongue is war and peace according to their passion
Out of longing, they freely shed streaming tears.
They are generous with longing, with passionate tears
