نامَslept مَنthe one who أَهدىgave لِيَto me الأَرَقاsleeplessness
نامَ مَن أَهدى لِيَ الأَرَقا
مُستَريحاًat ease سامَنيafflicted me with قَلَقاanxiety
مُستَريحاً سامَني قَلَقا
The one who gave me sleeplessness has fallen asleep,
The name of the one who gifted me sleeplessness
at ease, though he afflicted me with anxiety.
Making me restful, has made me anxious
لَوif يَبيتُspends the night الناسُthe people كُلُّهُمُall of them
لَو يَبيتُ الناسُ كُلُّهُمُ
بِسُهاديwith my sleeplessness بَيَّضَwould whiten الحَدَقاthe pupils
بِسُهادي بَيَّضَ الحَدَقا
If all people were to spend the night
If all people slept
with my sleeplessness, it would whiten their pupils.
With my wakefulness that blanched the eyelids
أَناI لَمnot أُرزَقI was granted مَوَدَّتَكُمyour affection
أَنا لَم أُرزَق مَوَدَّتَكُم
إِنَّماonly لِلعَبدِfor the servant ماwhat رُزِقاhe was allotted
إِنَّما لِلعَبدِ ما رُزِقا
I was not granted your affection;
I was not granted your love
a servant has only what he is allotted.
A servant gets only what he is destined
غَالَهُمoverwhelmed them وُدّيmy love فَماso not عَقِلواthey used reason
غَالَهُم وُدّي فَما عَقِلوا
حينَwhen سَدّواthey barred دونَهُin its way الطُرُقاthe paths
حينَ سَدّوا دونَهُ الطُرُقا
My love overwhelmed them, so they showed no sense
Their love overwhelmed them, so they did not comprehend
when they barred the paths to it.
When they blocked its paths
كانَthere was ليfor me قَلبٌa heart أَعيشُI lived بِهِby it
كانَ لي قَلبٌ أَعيشُ بِهِ
فَاِصطَلىso it warmed itself بِالحُبِّby love فَاِحتَرَقاand so it burned
فَاِصطَلى بِالحُبِّ فَاِحتَرَقا
I had a heart by which I lived;
I had a heart with which I lived
so it warmed itself at love's fire and burned.
It was set aflame with love, so it burned
