عيونُeyes العائِداتِthe women visiting the sick تَراكِsee you دونيwithout me
فَياso, oh حَسَديmy envy لِعَينَيof the two eyes of مَنwhoever يَراكِsees you
The eyes of the women visiting you see you, but I do not.
The eyes of the returning women see you without me
And oh, how I envy the eyes of whoever sees you!
So my envy for the eyes that see you
أُريدُكِI mean you بِالكَلامِwith words فَأَتَّقيهِمbut I am wary of them
فَأَعمِدُso I direct بِالكَلامِwith words إِلىtoward سِواكِsomeone other than you
I mean you with my words, but I am wary of them;
I want you with words so I avoid them
so I direct my words to someone other than you.
So I turn to words to you alone
وَأَكثِرُand I increase فيهِمُamong them ضَحِكيmy laughter لِيَخفىso it may be hidden
فَسِنّيso my tooth ضاحِكٌlaughing وَالقَلبُand the heart باكِweeping
And I laugh all the more among them, so it stays hidden;
And I laugh abundantly among them to hide
so my teeth laugh while my heart weeps.
My teeth are laughing while my heart is crying
أَماindeed وَاللَهِby God لَوif تَجِدينَyou felt وَجديmy longing
لَقَلقَلَwould surely shake ماwhat وَجَدتِyou felt إِذاًthen حَشاكِyour innermost heart
Indeed, by God, if you felt my longing,
By God if you find my passion
what you felt would then shake your very heart.
It would shake what you found then your calm
وَقاكِmay He protect you اللَهُGod كُلَّevery أَذىًharm بِنَفسيwith my own life
وَعَجَّلَand may He hasten ياO ظَلومُZalum (cruel one) لَناfor us شِفاكِyour recovery
May God shield you from every harm, with my life as ransom,
May God protect you from all harm for my soul
and hasten your recovery for us, O Zalum.
And hurry, oh unjust one, our healing
