لاnot أَرانيI see myself أَمَلُّgrow weary of ذِكرَmention الحِجازِthe Hijaz
Tell me about the Hijaz, for I
Tell me of Hejaz, for I
do not see myself tiring of the mention of the Hijaz.
Cannot cease thinking of Hejaz
وَاِنعَتواand describe ليto me ماwhat بَينَbetween بُطحانَButhan فَالمَسand the mos- (start of mosque)
جِدَ-que (completes mosque) ماwhat حَولَهُaround it وَماذاand what يُوازيit lies alongside
And describe to me what lies between Buthan and the mosque,
And imagine for me what lies between Butḥān and Fals
what surrounds it and what lies alongside it.
Regarding its mosque and surroundings - what rivals it?
إِنَّindeed فيin بَعضِsome of ماwhat هُناكَthere لَشَخصاًindeed a person
كانَused to يَشفيsoothe المَوعودَthe one given a promise بِالإِنجازِby fulfillment
Indeed, somewhere there is a person
For in some of what is there, was a person
who would soothe the one given a promise by fulfilling it.
Who fulfilled the promised with determination
تِلكَthat woman فَوزٌFawz فَقَبَّحso may He disgrace اللَهُGod شَيخاًan old man
حالَintervened بَينيbetween me وَبَينَهاand between her بِالمَخازيthrough shameful deeds
That is Fawz—may God disgrace an old man
That is a pride - so may Allah disgrace an old man
who came between me and her through shameful deeds.
Who came between me and it with obstacles
فَبَلائيso my suffering مُذsince فارَقَتنيshe left me طَويلٌlong-lasting
وَبَناتُand the daughters الفُؤادِof the heart ذاتُpossessing اِهتِزازِtrembling
So my suffering has lasted long since she left me,
So my affliction since it left me has been long
and the daughters of my heart tremble.
And the girls of my heart, trembling
وَدُموعيand my tears قَدindeed أَخلَقَتhave worn away ماءَluster وَجهيof my face

وَفُؤاديand my heart كَالراكِبِlike a rider المُجتازِpassing through
And my tears have worn away the luster of my face,
And my tears created the water of my face
and my heart is like a rider passing through.
And my heart like a crossing passenger
بَرَزَتshe appeared فيamong خَرائِدٍmaidens خَفِراتٍbashful

مُثقَلاتِheavy-laden الأَكفالِthe haunches وَالأَعجازِand the buttocks
She appeared among bashful maidens,
There appeared in faded scrolls, guards
with heavy haunches and buttocks.
Heavy of shackles and of backs
وَتَمَنَّتand she longed لِقايَto meet me فَوزٌFawz وَدونيand before me
فَلَواتٌdesert wastes تَحارُlose their way فيهاin them الجَوازيthe wild antelopes
And Fawz longed to meet me, while before me lay
And 'Fawz' wished for my encounter while around me
desert wastes where wild antelopes lose their way.
Were vast expanses where talents wander confused
فَتَباكَينَso they made themselves weep ثُمَّthen قُلنَthey said وَأَخلَصand were sincere (verb continues)
نَthey (feminine plural ending) لَهاfor her فيin الدُعاءِthe prayer غَيرَnot هَوازيjesting
So they made themselves weep, then said, sincerely
So she cried and then said, praying sincerely
praying for her, not in jest:
For her in supplication without distraction

May God unite Fawz and Abbas,
May Allah unite Fawz and 'Abbas
so they may both live in happiness and pride.
And so they lived in joy and pride
