تَضِنُّshe begrudges إِذاwhen اِستَمنَحتُهاI asked her to grant لِيَto me نَظرَةًa glance
أُداويI heal بِهاwith it ماwhat يُحدِثُcauses الحُبُّlove فيin صَدريmy breast
She begrudges me a glance when I ask her for one,
She frowns when I ask her for a glance,
With which I would heal what love inflicts within my breast.
With which I may heal what love inflicts upon my heart,
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَتَبدوsurely appear ليto me الكَواعِبُmaidens with budding breasts كَالدُمىlike figurines
فَيَحفَظُso safeguards قَلبيmy heart غَيبَهاher honor in her absence وَهيَwhile she لاnot تَدريknows
And indeed, maidens with budding breasts appear to me like figurines,
Yet to me, maidens seem like lifeless forms,
Yet my heart keeps faith with her in her absence, though she does not know.
So my heart preserves her absence though she knows not,
وَيَحجُزُنيand restrains me مَنthe One whom لاnot أَرىI see دونَfrom reaching ماwhat أَرىI see
شَهيديmy witness عَلَيهto this عالَمُthe Knower (contextual reading; supplied vowels mean 'world') السِرِّthe secret وَالجَهرِand the open
And the One I cannot see keeps me from what I see;
And one I do not see imprisons me over what I see,
My witness to this is the Knower of the secret and the open.
My secret witness over whispered and loudly spoken,
وَيَحزُنُand stores (likely intended; supplied spelling means 'and saddens') قَلبيmy heart سِرَّهاher secret وَيَصونُهُand guards it
وَلَيسَand there is not لَدَيهاwith her مِنany حِفاظٍfidelity وَلاnor شُكرِgratitude
And my heart stores her secret and guards it,
And my heart grieves for her mystery and protects it,
Yet she has neither fidelity nor gratitude.
Though she has neither gratitude nor guardians for it.
