لَيسَis not الخَلِيُّone free مِنَof الهَوىlove كَمُعَذَّبٍlike one tormented
لَمdid not يُمسِenter the evening مِنof حَرِّheat الهَوىlove خِلواfree
One free of love is not like one tormented,
The one devoid of passion is not like one who suffers
Who has not passed an evening free of love's heat.
He has not touched the heat of passion before being free
حَسبُenough الهَوىlove بَلوىaffliction فَقَدfor indeed بَلَغَhas reached الهَوىlove
بيwith me ياO مُحَمَّدُMuhammad غايَةَfurthest limit البَلوىaffliction
Love is affliction enough, for love has brought
Passion's ordeal is enough, passion has reached
Me, O Muhammad, to affliction's furthest limit.
In me O Muhammad, the utmost ordeal
أَبقىhas left الهَوىlove لِأَخيكَfor your brother نَفساًa soul حِرَّةًparched

Love has left your brother a parched soul,
Passion left for your brother a free soul
Weary, and a gaunt, wasted body.
Yearning and an emaciated, melting body

And if exhaustion reaches its utmost in its sufferers
And when shame ends with its people
One day, the illness of love's companion is the most grievous.
One day, my brother's love is the most harmful
