ياO ذاyou الَّذيwho أَنكَرَنيdid not recognize me طَرفُهُhis gaze
يا ذا الَّذي أَنكَرَني طَرفُهُ
إِذwhen ذابَmelted away جِسميmy body وَعَلانيand overtook me شُحوبpallor
إِذ ذابَ جِسمي وَعَلاني شُحوب
O you whose gaze did not recognize me,
O you whose glance denied me
when my body melted away and pallor overtook me:
When my body melted and paleness overcame me
ماnot مَسَّنيtouched me ضُرٌّaffliction وَلَكِنَّنيbut I
ما مَسَّني ضُرٌّ وَلَكِنَّني
جَفَوتُI forsook نَفسيmyself إِذwhen جَفانيforsook me الحَبيبthe beloved
جَفَوتُ نَفسي إِذ جَفاني الحَبيب
No affliction has touched me, but I
No harm touched me, but
forsook myself when the beloved forsook me.
I spurned myself when the beloved spurned me
